Background
Company description and business need
AerialOGI is a company that creates drones and software to help users identify gas leaks on chemical plant sites
Aerial OGI aims to make its platform more visually appealing and easy to use in a tablet device environment for acquisition
Problem statement
It is difficult to control the levers while wearing a lab coat and using fingers on a tablet device. How might we help users easily control the levers to efficiently detect gas leaks on a tablet device?
How is this problem real?
“It is difficult to control the small levers as oftentimes they have gloves on.” - P1
“The levers being clustered are error-prone as the control area is small.” - P5
Gas leaks caused explosions killing 122 people and injuring 603 from 2010 to 2021

Iteration 1
Original interface
Difficult to control as buttons and levers are clustered
Low-fi iteration
Increased visibility through the redesigned structure
Iteration 2
Low-fi iteration
Difficult to control for unprofessional users
High-fi prototype
Prevent errors with detailed values and explanation feature
Final design
Solution 1
Easier to spot and click with larger panel real estate
Larger buttons and more efficient use of panel real estate for easier control in a tablet environment
Solution 2
More accurate controls via categorization and numerical values
Labeled categorization and numerical values for users to control levers more easily and accurately
Solution 3
Enhanced accessibility through a separate Information tab
The accessible Information tab helps users better understand features for safety and more effective use
Impact
Company integration
Redesigned Optical Gas Imaging sensor of the company got integrated into Vision Aerial’s product
Feedback
Easy and clear controls
We received feedback from users that the updated control panel made the controls easy and clear, which could contribute to detecting and controlling more gas leaks to ensure safety
